چکیده
Low energy x-ray fluorescence (LEXRF) detection was optimized for imaging cerebral glucose metabolism by mapping the fluorine LEXRF signal of F in FDG, trapped as intracellular F-deoxyglucose-6-phosphate (FDG-6P) at 1μm spatial resolution from 3μm thick brain slices. FDG metabolism was evaluated in brain structures closely resembling the general cerebral cytoarchitecture following formalin fixation of brain slices and their inclusion in an epon matrix. 2-dimensional distribution maps of FDG-6P were placed in a cytoarchitectural and morphological context by simultaneous LEXRF mapping of N and O, and scanning transmission x-ray (STXM) imaging. A disproportionately high uptake and metabolism of glucose was found in neuropil relative to intracellular domains of the cell body of hypothalamic neurons, showing directly that neurons, like glial cells, also metabolize glucose. As Fdeoxyglucose-6P is structurally identical to F-deoxyglucose-6P, LEXRF of subcellular F provides a link to in vivo FDG PET, forming a novel basis for understanding the physiological mechanisms underlying the FDG PET image, and the contribution of neurons and glia to the PET signal.

Feasibility of direct mapping of cerebral fluorodeoxy-D-glucose metabolism in situ at subcellular resolution using soft X-ray fluorescence.
Glucose metabolism is difficult to image with cellular resolution in mammalian brain tissue, particularly with (18) fluorodeoxy-D-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET). To this end, we explored the potential of synchrotron-based low-energy X-ray fluorescence (LEXRF) to image the stable isotope of fluorine (F) in phosphorylated FDG (DG-6P) at 1 μm(2) spatial resolution in 3-μm-thick b...
متن کاملLateral Soft Tissue X-ray for Patients with Suspected Fishbone in Oropharynx, A thing in the past
Introduction: Fishbone is the most common foreign body found in the oropharynx. Conventionally patients with suspected fishbone in the throat would have mirror laryngoscopy followed by lateral soft tissue X-ray to look for the fishbone or observe impacts caused by the fishbone i.e. soft tissue swelling or air in upper esophagus. However, the most common site of fishbone impact is the suprahyoid...
متن کاملComparative Study of Voxel-Based Epileptic Foci Localization Accuracy between Statistical Parametric Mapping and Three-dimensional Stereotactic Surface Projection
INTRODUCTION Fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron-emission tomography (18F-FDG-PET) is widely used to help localize the hypometabolic epileptogenic focus for presurgical evaluation of drug-refractory epilepsy patients. Two voxel-based brain mapping methods to interpret 18F-FDG-PET, statistical parametric mapping (SPM) and three-dimensional stereotactic surface projection (3D-SSP), improve th...
متن کاملInvestigation and Measurement of Ash Content of Coal in Zirab Coal Mine-Iran Using Dual Energy -Ray and X-Ray Fluorescence Methods
Coal with low ash content has an important role in the coal and steel industry. There are different methods to measure the ash content. The conventional method which is used in most coal mines of Iran, is to burn the coal and measure the remaining ash. A new method has been recently developed at Nuclear Research Center (NRC) of Iran, Which works on the basis of the absorption of the dual en...
متن کاملComparison of Tc-99m sestamibi and F-18 FDG-PET in the assessment of multiple myeloma.
BACKGROUND Tc-99m methoxy-isobutyl-isonitrile (MIBI) has been reported to be a useful tracer in patients with multiple myeloma (MM). Few articles have reported the potential value of fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) in the evaluation of MM. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to compare the diagnostic abilities of the MIBI scan and the FDG-PET scan in t...
